First post of my new project!
Now I'll warn you this is my first blog so things might be messy, confusing and just plain rubbish. But if nothing else, it will at least give me a place to keep my thoughts and plans for my new project. Building a life size replica R2 D2!
My knowledge on all of this is still so limited compared to many of the people over at www.astromech.net. If you've somehow been unfortunate enough to have stumbled onto my blog looking for tips and advise then I'd highly recommend checking out that website instead. As the years progress I might have one or to gems of wisdom to share here, but as of yet there's nothing worth looking at - except perhaps a few photos of those skilled people who have inspired me with there builds (once they've given me the ok to do so of course!)
First things first then. After looking into many different types of ways to build my astromech I've decided to go with styrene. Not only is it the cheapest option available to me, most of the styrene droids I've seen look really good!
On top of that, a very clever and dedicated chap, Dave Everett, has designed blueprints and tutorials (available through the Yahoo! group) which will save me countless hours and frustration in trying to them myself.
I'm hoping to have a fully rolling RC R2, with rotating dome, light display & sounds and a 2-3-2 set-up with in a year of this post. It will be interesting to come back to this in a year and see how far away from my goal I actually am! Of course, my overall goal will be far more than this - but lets see what I'm capable of first shall we?
