Horsing around

A job I've put off for a while is the Horseshoes.  I was a bit annoyed when the router took more than one of the pieces and left a nasty gash in it, so I put them to one side and sulked.

However, the dead line for a finished R2 is looming only 2 months away and I don't think I'll be getting a set of aluminium ones in time.  I can make those ones for droid 2 :)

They turned out to be fairly simple to build  After layering up the pieces for the "boxed" areas, I glued in place the inner shim details and hand cut the 3mm strips that follow the long straight.

As you can see in the pics above, there's the gash that was taken by the wrath of the router.  I had a simple fix though :)  I've put a piece of 3mm styrene over the top and filed it to sit in line with the curve.  After skinning these, I can use some filler to hide it once it's painted over

For the shim bit that's supposed to be aluminium, I simply used some more of that silver tape.  I've only done the edges as they're all that will show.  And it looks good!

And a nearly finished leg!

Still have a messy carpet.

Another fun job I've been working on is the ankle cylinders.  I get to have a play on a lathe!

This is a picture of what will become the end of the cylinder.  I have some 35mm wide aluminium tube that this will fit snugly into.  All that remains of this end piece is for the large circular bit to be trimmed down to make a flat edge.

Stay tuned!
